SugarFree Protocol – Lisa1

Another Lisa! πŸ™‚ She’s start on Monday, July 15 – but please welcome her now.

Lisa’s Introduction:

Hi all! I’m looking forward to this journey, though I’m scared and excited at the same time. I’m 28, 5′ 5″ and weigh 158 pounds. My struggle with weight began early. I was always overweight even though I ate the same amount as everyone else.

I developed a severe eating disorder in high school and college, dropping down to (a scary) 85 pounds at one point. I never did get “better” – but my body just spontaneously gained weight. Being in rigid control of things is still a problem I need to work on. Even when I weighed 135, I had to battle to keep my weight stable. Eventually that meant two to three hours of exercise a day while eating fewer than 500 calories to make that happen.

That’s when I started seeing doctors; I knew something was really wrong. I’ve tried numerous medications to treat insulin resistance and hypothyroidism, and nothing has worked to keep the weight off permanently. SugarFree says it’s because I’ve starved myself for years – and I have.

Although I knew I was insulin and thyroid hormone resistant (with low levels of ferritin), my metabolic blood tests results show that all of the treatments my doctors have prescribed (thyroid meds, wrong kind of metformin) were wrong, and in fact worked against my progress. In fact, they made me worse because I’m now hyperinsulinemic, too. And I have continued to eat incorrectly. I look forward to correcting my body chemistry and restoring my broken metabolism. I hope in the coming year I’ll be much healthier.

I woke early and was starving; normally I eat breakfast right away. I ate at eleven and it’s now one, so I’m worried about how hungry I’ll be later since I normally eat three meals a day. Eating the actual meal was fine – the huge amount of veggies actually made me feel kind of sick toward the end. I could care less about the taste as long as the process works. I ate everything, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the week.

[Note: Lisa, welcome! First, the best way to eat your veggies is to roast them in a hot oven for about twenty minutes. I’ve written about this a lot in comments here, giving specific directions, so you should be able to find them easily if you search. Second, you WILL be hungry later – and ravenous by morning. That’s because it will take you two or three days (at least) to get into lipolysis, where you’ll then be ‘fed’ your own excess fat in addition to the food you eat with a fork. The hunger will disappear when that happens. In the meantime, if you wish to eat earlier – do! :)]

Protocol Round 1, Week 1, Day 2 – 7/16

Weight: 157.8 pounds = down .4 pound

Meal:
– 8 oz chicken liver
– 1 T butter
– 1 T duck fat
– 8 oz spinach
– 9 oz asparagus
– 1 oz sweet potato
– 4 oz duck egg

I was so hungry yesterday. I even had trouble sleeping – I haven’t been this hungry since I was anorexic. It was kind of scary because I’ve spent a lot of time working on not being afraid of food and eating a normal amount. I’ve at least accomplished that – even though I’m overweight, I definitely don’t fear food the way I used to. This hunger feels scary in that every eating disorder treatment center I’ve been to has taught me not to let myself get very hungry because I’m hurting my body, I can relapse fairly easily, and trash my metabolism in a short amount of time.

[Note: Lisa, it’s important to understand the difference between treating anorexia and becoming insulin sensitive again, while losing your excess adipose fat. At the moment, although you’ve been eating sufficient calories (before starting Protocol) – your body wasn’t actually getting much of the nourishment of those calories. That’s because most of the energy was going into fat storage. Which means that although you weren’t technically starving – your brain believes you are starving. And this is true for everyone who is over-fat, not just you. One goal of Protocol is to get your brain to recognize that energy is for burning, not storing. Which, in a few short weeks, it will.

Meantime, you can set your mind at ease. You’re already in ‘starvation mode’ despite all the calories you’ve been eating, but even if you weren’t, you don’t get there by a week or two of reduced calories. A month or two – absolutely. And you don’t get there when your body has sufficient calories, which it will have in a few days – by all the stored fat that will start to be released from where insulin has locked it away. You will be ‘eating’ thousands of calories a day – you just won’t be doing it with a fork. :D]

I really like that I only have to think about eating once during the day, that’s an awesome time saver. However, the meal was not great – I absolutely hated the chicken liver. Maybe I overcooked it?

[Note: Chicken liver should only be cooked for five minutes total: three on the first side, two on the second – over low/medium heat – and then removed from the hot pan immediately. Also, for folks who have never had liver, it is an acquired test. You will acquire it. :)]

I was looking at my 2-hr PP and I’m surprised it went up. Does this mean I haveΒ  Metabolic Syndrome XX?

[Note: That won’t become apparent for a few months. It could have been anything – touching food between tests, physical activity, or eating/drinking anything – even tea – after your 1-hr and before your 2-hr PP. Let’s see how those numbers look in September.]

I think I’m finally in lipolysis! I was hungry yesterday, but last night, not so much. Then today the gnawing feeling has gone away. I did notice a lift in my mood yesterday as well; a general feeling of well-being.

The meal was large for me, and it took me over an hour to eat it, but I did manage to do so.

I’m simply amazed at the progress that I’ve made in such a short time. I’m finally allowing myself to have hope that this will work for me. I have never in my life been able to lose three pounds in three days, ever. After all of the diets, medications, and doctors, I thought I might have to stay fat the rest of my life because my body was punishing me for starving myself so badly. One last test will be Maintenance, and making sure that I don’t regain all the weight againΒ  – but I am slowly, surely, becoming a believer!

[Note: Lisa, you are in lipolysis, and will be happy with your measurements on Monday. πŸ™‚ As for Maintenance, you will absolutely keep off every ounce and inch you lost on Phase 1. Ah, the beauty of real science. πŸ˜€ As for the meal size: Roast, Roast, Roast those veggies!]

My energy was really high today. Almost blacked out when I stood up from bed due to low blood sugar, but SugarFree explained why it happened (my pancreas is still pumping out too much insulin overnight since it hasn’t yet gotten the message that so much is no longer needed) and told me how to fix it if it happens again: pure glucose Smarties!

Doing well, really getting used to this diet. Feel good πŸ™‚

[Note: You may be feeling good – but unfortunately your blood sugars aren’t. πŸ™ When you see a spike like that at the 1 or 2-hr PP, you need to stop, put on your detective hat, and figured out what caused it. In this case, that’s easy: the rice. So, next day or so, pull back on the starch carb and later this week, after your sugars normalize, try the rice again, only this time half the amount and see how your body handles it.]

Was a little hungry tonight, but the hunger pang went away quickly. Mentioned I’ve been having some stomach cramping, and when I told SugarFree I wasn’t using much (if any) salt on my food, she told me that I needed to use it liberally, as this is a very diuretic way of eating. I used a ton of salt today!

TOM last night, two days ahead of schedule. I’ve been getting acupuncture for my PCOS pain (usually very intense the first and second day, so much so that I can’t get through the day without taking Nsaids). I didn’t have to take any pain meds yesterday. So either I’m seeing results from the acupuncture or it has something to do with Protocol, perhaps a mixture of both. Good news either way though :)

First day of Maintenance – looking forward to eating more fat for the next couple of weeks. Also, surprisingly, I did not have to take pain meds for period again yesterday. Yay for Protocol / acupuncture!

I lost an additional inch from my calves, arms, knees and thighs, so my loss for the week is 2.75″ – which means I’ve lost ten pounds and five inches of fat in just two weeks.

I felt full toward the end of my meal, but not uncomfortably so. It’s a new feeling to me though, so it’ll take some getting used to. I think it’s the last time I’ll put two large volume veggies together (kale and greens).

Last night I felt hungry, which I think is a good sign. Today, I was decently hungry to eat, and although I was kind of full like yesterday, I was okay eating all of my food.

[Note: Yep, this is a good sign. Right now your brain is sending you ghrelin/hunger signals in the evening because you lost ten pounds and five inches of fat in the last two weeks, which is a LOT in a very short time. Once your brain and body understands that the good times are here, and that thousands of calories will be coming in each and every day and week, those signals should cease. Being hungry before eating however, is a *good* thing.]

[Note: Neither! Always, always, ALWAYS take food you can eat with you on a trip. A handful of nuts. A couple of hard-boiled eggs if possible. A package of cheese. Or eat before you leave on the trip (and still take the nuts and cheese). Anything but airport food OR starvation. :)]

[Note: Yes, to all the above, so changing all three of those things will be helpful.

However, it’s always good to keep things in perspective, and to remember the *goal* of a successful Maintenance: to regain not more than a pound from day one to day thirty, and to regain no fat at all. How did you do? In your four weeks of Maintenance, while eating a boatload of fat and calories, you lost 5.8 pounds, .75″ from your bust, 1.5 inches from your waist, and 2.25 inches from your hips. In other words, far from gaining *anything* — you successfully kept off everything you lost in Protocol, and lost some more. Pretty good, I’d say. :D]

[Note: One of the reasons for the diminished hunger is that you weren’t eating enough; the other is that your late night eating was preventing you from getting into lipolysis – but by not eating last night, you appear to finally have achieved it. Which means you are now ‘eating’ your own fat, thus making you less hungry. Keep this up all weekend, and you should see some movement in your measurements on Monday. πŸ™‚ By the way – congratulations! I ate too much salt yesterday, probably retaining water again.

[Note: Ah, another Zombie Myth that refuses to die. πŸ˜€ Yes, it seems logical to think that ‘too much salt’ (which is, by the way, impossible to consume on Protocol) causes water retention, but like much in human biology, the truth is counter-intuitive.

Your kidneys require a certain amount of sodium to function (which is why we, like most animals, will perish in the complete absence of it), and to allow potassium to be retained. If you don’t have enough, what you do have is diluted in a lot of water. The kidneys then do what they need to do: they hang on to every last molecule of sodium by holding on to every last molecule of water it’s dissolved in. Hence, insufficient sodium = water retention.

When your kidneys have too much sodium, it’s much easier: it just dumps it into your urine — along with the huge amount of water it’s dissolved in. Hence, too much sodium = the opposite of bloat.

Protocol is an extremely low sodium way of eating, since it’s zero fast food and only small amounts of bread — the foods that come loaded with sodium. Thus it’s important to not just have a very liberal hand with the salt shaker, but from time to time — when you’re getting bloated — to take more serious action. That would be one-half of one (small) chicken bouillon cube in eight ounces of warm water with your meal, taken daily for a week. It will take about a week for everything to right itself. This is often necessary in the summer too, when we tend to drink a lot more and thus dilute the little sodium you do eat.]
