Alina will join us on Monday, February 25, but you can read about her now.
Alina’s Introduction:
Hello, everyone! I am thirty-four, 5′ 5″ and weigh 142 pounds. Although you might think I don’t need Protocol, I have been through the ringer with the HCG hoax. True, I lost forty-five pounds over three rounds, but have gained half of it back. Worse, I really trashed my metabolism. I’ve gained as much as five pounds in one day, to a point where my face and extremities were puffy and I couldn’t fit in my clothes. And here comes SugarFree, with her endless dedication and talents to help me understand what is happening: although my triglycerides and HDL numbers look very good, my total cholesterol is too high – which is indicative of hypothyroidism. Also, my T3 is very low, my Reverse T3 is extremely high, which means I’m in a metabolic black hole, storing fat instead of burning it for energy. In other words, my thyroid gland is fine, but my thyroid hormones are not.
This explains why my leptin level is twice true normal. There’s a new medical term for my condition: TOFI (thin on the outside, fat on the inside). I may look thin in clothes, but my organs are surrounded by too much fat. And because I’ve been basically eating starvation level calories and almost no fat, I haven’t felt hungry in a long time.
Thank heaven for SugarFree and her work. My problems are much clearer now and the path to fix them is full of real food not just the low-fat smoothies I’ve been eating. That’s why SugarFree is starting me on the Maintenance phase – to rebuild my metabolism.Β I am ready! π
Protocol Maintenance, Week 1, Day 1 β 2/25/13
Weight: 141.8 pounds
Measurements:
Bust: 35β
Waist: 30.5β
Hips: 35.5β
Ketostix: negative
Blood Glucose:
β Fasting: 76
β 1-hour PP (after lunch): 74
β 2-hour PP (after lunch): 77
I felt a bit dizzy after my main meal. I ate everything, and yes, duck fat is indeed the liquid gold every chef talks about π Can’t wait to feel like myself again!
[Note: Alina, welcome! Although it may take you months to feel like your old self (it took years to get where you are now, so full healing will not come in days or weeks) — but you should start to feel better in a week or so. :)]
Protocol Maintenance, Week 1, Day 2 β 2/26/13
Weight: 140.2 = down 1.6 pounds
Ketostix: negative
Blood Glucose:
β Fasting: 74
β 1-hour PP (after lunch): 80
β 2-hour PP (after lunch): 74
I was very full after my meal but not uncomfortable. This morning I felt very hungry so this meal helped satisfy the need for food and feel it will successfully hold through rehearsal tonight π This Protocol is incredible! Besides feeling lighter, being less bloated feels better!
[Note: For a long time you’ve eaten about 700 calories a day, couldn’t lose weight and were “never” hungry. You’re eating well over double that amount now, are losing weight and have experienced your first true normal metabolic hormonal signaling: getting hungry at the appropriate time, which is an hour or two before mealtime. Yay! :)]
Protocol Maintenance, Week 1, Day 2 β 2/26/13
Weight: 138.6 = down 1.6 pounds
Ketostix: negative
Blood Glucose:
β Fasting: 64
β 1-hour PP (after lunch): 81
β 2-hour PP (after lunch): 74
I woke up feeling very weak and shaking. I got worse during the day and ate very early (for me). I wonder why my fasting blood sugar reading was so low. I feel better now, and the liver was simply delicious! What a great flavor with all the veggies!
[Note: Alina, your pancreas has been pumping out a lot of insulin over the last several months to help deal with all the glucose you had been eating. Now that you are no longer eating a lot of foods that convert to glucose or, like veggies, convert very slowly, that level off insulin is no longer required. Unfortunately, it takes a few weeks for your pancreas to get that message and produce less insulin. Since you don’t eat during the night, there’s nothing for that insulin to work on, and it lowers your fasting blood sugars – sometimes by a lot. Your sugars should normalize in the 70’s in a few weeks, but in the meantime if you’re fasting sugars are under 70, just eat a quarter of a single Smartie, which is 100% glucose. That’s a ‘candy’ you can find in any grocery or 7/11 type store. It will raise your blood sugar by 10-15 points in about ten minutes.]
Protocol Maintenance, Week 1, Day 4 β 2/26
Weight: 136.4 = down 2.2 pounds
Ketostix: negative
Blood Glucose:
β Fasting: 64
β 1-hour PP (after lunch): 74
β 2-hour PP (after lunch): 82
This morning I felt VERY hungry so following SugarFreeβs advice, I ate a quarter of a Smartie. I wonder why the BS reading spike at the 2 hour PP mark.
[Note: The Smartie isn’t for hunger. If you’re hungry, we need to add more food to your daily intake. The Smartie is only for fasting blood sugar under 70. Also, the rest of your blood sugars were perfectly normal today – excellent, in fact – with no spike whatsoever. :)]
Experiencing a slight headache now. But overall I see improvement in my sleep quality. Weight is coming off like crazy! Thank you SugarFree!
[Note: The loss is almost all water right now, as your body eliminates all the extra water molecules that comes from eating almost no fat and lots of carbohydrates. Hopefully that will change in the next week or so.]
Protocol Maintenance, Week 1, Day 5 β 3/1
Weight: 136.6 = up .2 pound

Today I didnβt feel much hunger this morning. The only thing was I could not finish my total amount of artichokes. I was full but it was so yummy! Thanks SugarFree!

Could not sleep at all with sore throat. I hope to get better soon, being sick is never fun π
[Note: No, it’s not – and I hope you feel better soon. In the meantime – and until you are 100% better – eat the Protocol Illness Menu: a few eggs gently fried in butter, two or three strips of bacon, and either a slice of whole wheat or sugar-free, gluten-free bread with butter.
On the other hand, your first week of Maintenance should be an eye-opener for any reader of this blog who still believes in the Easter Bunny Calories In, Calories Out, or that Fat makes you Fat. Until a week ago, you were starving yourself on a low-fat 600-700 calories a day, and you couldn’t lose an ounce. You’ve spent one week on Protocol eating a high-fat 1700-1800 calories a day, and you’ve lost EIGHT POUNDS AND 2.5 INCHES OF FAT! Those eight pounds, by the way, represents over five percent of your total body weight. Isn’t real science and human biology wonderful? :)]

[Note: Sounds like you’re really on the mend. And don’t worry about the pounds – they’re just water, which often happens after illness and after losing a fair bit of fat quickly, too. They’ll be gone in a few days. :)]

Feeling okay, with energy. Canβt understand the increase in waist line, but the sugar readings are excellent.Β Still not sleeping all that well, but as SugarFree explained, it will take many months – not days – to heal the damage I did by starving myself on an extremely low-fat diet. My hormones will stay out of whack for some time.
[Note: You lost a lot of fat the week before last in a short time. The body is simply filling up the emptying fat cells with water in the hopes you’ll fill them with fat again. After a week or two of you not doing that, it will let the water go and the measurements will go down again.]

My ketostix is ‘large’ – finally. After two weeks of showing negative, SugarFree asked me to check if mine were still good by sticking one in acetone nail polish remover. Turns out they were too old to use, so I got new ones yesterday. What a difference!
I feel much better after my meal, finished everything. Yummy! Energy was almost lacking in the morning, but after the meal of the day, itβs a sudden boost and it feels so good! My body is learning how to consume the fat and all other goodies Iβm feeding it. SugarFree is the most amazing woman in the world! What a change already! Thank you infinitely!

I slept better last night following SugarFree’s advice, which was to stop using Melatonin like a sleeping pill/drug (which it is not) and to use it as what it is, a hormone. I was taking it right before I wanted to sleep, but SugarFree explained that the melatonin in our bodies is primed to rise at dusk, and that I needed to take it right then. Full nighttime was already too late. I truly felt like my sleep bank was getting deprived and now it appears to be changing. Energy levels have increased a bit today — thank you SugarFree! All I desire is to feel less bloated and rid this nagging water weight. π
[Note: I’m glad the advice worked. π I can’t tell you how many people take massive doses of melatonin an hour before bedtime, then wondering why they can’t sleep through the night. It should say ‘hormone’ on the bottle, with correct directions to take at dusk and no later, but it doesn’t and so people think it is a ‘supplement’ or drug. Once you take it at the right time however, you only need to take it for about a week or two – no more. Taken at the right time, the extra melatonin will inform your brain that previous levels were insufficient, and the brain will raise the amount accordingly, so that you no longer need it. Isn’t the body amazing? :D]

Everything is getting back on track, slowly but surely. Good sleep, and great energy even after work. I was really hungry today and loved every bite of food I ate. My body is definitely starting to follow the rules better – and boy, am I glad! π
[Note: Getting really hungry before eating – even at the high fat/high calories you’re eating daily – is a great sign that your metabolism is coming fully awake again, and starting to burn those calories for energy, rather than storing them as fat as it used to do. And this is only week three. Imagine how you’ll feel in a few months! :)]

[Note: Just the effect of your body struggling with a severe allergic reaction. Same thing about the ‘increase’ in your bust and waist measurements. Feeling good today and had plenty of energy. Don’t understand my 2-hr PP readings. I suppose insulin is still trying to regulate the amount of sugar after all this time.
[Note: Alina, once you eat a meal, insulin is raised and “regulates” blood sugars until the entire carbohydrate part of the meal (and protein, too) is completely converted to glucose. That takes anywhere from six to eight hours – not just the first two! And if you’ve eaten properly — lots of fat, modest protein and carbohydrates — that process can last even longer, because fat slows down the carb-to-glucose conversion. This is a good thing, but blood sugars going up over time instead of down is not. If your 2-hr PP is higher than 1-hr by more than 2 points, you should continue to take your blood sugars every hour until they finally fall. Then note how many hours have passed since eating, and adjust your menu accordingly. It is a sign that your insulin is not effective – it’s lazy – and that’s a sign of Metabolic Syndrome XX.]

I’m fine overall, but last night I felt incredibly hungry again. This also happened in the morning to the point where I get dizzy and weak.
[Note: Hunger at night means yes, your metabolism is rising and requires more nutrient, so I’ve raised your daily intake substantially. Hunger in the morning however, is a good sign that metabolic hormonal signaling is being restored, and you should not wait until you are ‘dizzy and weak’ to eat. If you rise and are really hungry – EAT.Β :)]

[Note: It actually could be. Although most doctors don’t know this, recent medical studies have indicated that what is diagnosed as depression, is often thyroid hormone resistance! These patients do not respond well (or at all) to antidepressants, but when given thyroid hormones instead, depression is greatly alleviated. Not surprising, when you think about how much of our metabolisms these hormones control.]

Feeling great. Had a wonderful lunch and everything was delicious. I’m laughing now, looking at how little Phase 1 food is compared to Maintenance levels π

I had a really good week-end with extended energy. I keep holding on to water over and over again, and I wish understood why this happens.
[Note: it’s easy: your meter – slowly creeping up a bit – has been trying to tell you something, but you haven’t been listening. And that is, you’ve been eating more starchy carbs than your body can handle well on the low-fat intake of Phase 1. And all those carbs carry 4 molecules of water per gram, which is what you’ve retained. No more starch carbs until next Monday, and that excess water should leave quickly and, once you’re in lipolysis, not return. :)]

Last night had a headache and stomach-ache. I’m not sure what it is but will get it checked out later today. Other than that this morning I felt happy beyond belief. I guess the supplements are finally kicking in π
[Note: Alina, I’m sorry you’re not feeling well. Your suddenly negative ketostix says that you’re either coming down with something, or fighting it off. As for the supplements making you feel ‘happy’ – in a way that’s true. The supplements, along with the Protocol way of eating, have helped your metabolic hormones (especially your thyroid hormones) start working again, and that is what influences mood, for good (happiness) or if insufficient, for worse (depression). Glad you’re finally moving in the ‘happy’ direction. π Hope you feel better soon!]

I like my BG readings and definitely understand how the carb-fat-protein ratios affect my meter readings and weight loss. Knowledge is power!
