SugarFree Protocol – Pam

Pam will join us on Monday, April 2, but you can learn more about her now.

Pam’s Introduction:

Hello, everyone.  My name is Pam and I am 68, 5′ 6″ and as of this morning, weigh 275 pounds.

I am the poster child for diet failures. Even though I’m tall (in class pictures from first grade, I am head and shoulders above everyone, even the boys) I have battled with my weight for as long as I can remember. Over the years I have tried many diets and eating programs, including Weight Watchers, Atkins, Macrobiotics, grapefruit diet, soup diet, counting calories, etc. None of them worked, at least for long. I might lose a little, but then every pound came back and they each brought a friend with them. I grew up eating the Standard American Diet: Low fat, high carb and for goodness sake, clean your plate since there are starving children in China.

Over the last couple of years I educated myself enough to realize that I need to eat a higher fat, moderate protein and low carb diet. But even doing that I was unable to lose the weight that I have carried around forever. I have Osteoarthritis as well as Fibromyalgia and find myself dealing with considerable pain on a daily basis. Over the counter pain meds barely make a dent in the discomfort. I have a bilateral hip replacement and my knees are about as bad as they can get. My metabolic blood tests show that I am borderline-diabetic and severely Hypothyroid with Thyroid Hormone Resistance.

As many of you have done, I recently tried HCG.  I did four rounds and lost almost ninety pounds by starving myself on Simeons’ protocol. Each round was harder than the one before and after the third round, the pounds crept back on. Fortunately I did the homeopathic version (which I’ve recently learned has no HCG in it!), so at least I didn’t do more damage to my already battered and broken system. Now I must lose this weight. I must heal my body. My obesity has been a negative factor for most of my life. I want to spend all of the rest of my years as a healthy, normal-size person. And after reading all of your successes I know it is possible for me to succeed as well, because this Protocol will work. I am looking forward to my journey and joining you all.

2-hour PP (after breakfast): 83

I completed my first day with no issues whatsoever. I was pleased to see decent blood glucose numbers. My energy level was a little better than usual, considering the damp, cold and windy weather we are having. That would normally increase my pain and decrease my desire to do much of anything. I am looking forward to day two.

I may hold the world’s record for water weight lost in one day. I was about ready to just move everything into the bathroom. I had a bit of a headache (very unusual for me) in the middle of the night, but it was better this morning.

[Note: Record, indeed! The headache will go away in a few days; it’s carb withdrawal. I know you didn’t eat many carbs, or sugar carbs, but your body has been converting some of your protein into glucose, which it no longer can do. Great start, Pam. :)]

Protocol Round 1, Week 1, Day 3 – 4/4

Weight: 265.8 = down 2 pounds

This is probably still water loss, but I will take whatever I get with a smile. I had just a bit of a headache in the middle of the night as I visited the bathroom – again. But nothing I couldn’t handle. I thought I would have difficulty eating my large meal at noontime, and then only salad greens later in the day. So far I have been able to manage, even though Wednesday is a difficult day for me since I am up and out the door by about 4 a.m.

I was very hungry by 10:30, but was able to hold out until noon with only some stomach rumblings. I had a couple of cups of hot tea during the morning which really helped. Dinner was fabulous. The liver was quickly cooked in the bacon fat and was tender and juicy. The zucchini and asparagus were sautéed in the butter with a little garlic and ginger until tender-crisp, then removed from the pan. The Swiss chard went in next until it wilted. My sugar levels today were not so good, so I am sure SugarFree will make some changes to my menu for tomorrow.

Weight: 259.1 = down 6.7 pounds

Lunch:
– 8 oz Spinach
– 5 oz asparagus

I hope that even a little of this weight loss might be fat. Monday will tell the tale when I measure. But either way, I am so happy to get rid of this excess water. Life was much easier today, with much less stress and less pain as well. I am happy to see my glucose numbers in better range.

[Note: Holy Moly – you’ve lost 16.8 pounds in four days! Are you sure you’re not part Camel? 😀 And yes, as you will see on Monday, some of the loss is fat and not just water. Your sugars are great, too — and I’m so glad you’re feeling better!]

Weight: 257.6 = down 1.5 pounds

– 1 oz radish
– 1 oz celery
– 1 oz cooked rice

I slept poorly last night. Probably about four hours in all. My brain would not shut off, even though my body was tired. I woke up groggy this morning and wanted to turn over and go back to sleep. But once I was up and going, I was feeling a bit clearer headed. I was a little hungry late last night. I briefly thought I wanted something sweet. But then I realized that if I could have anything I wanted, it would be a hard-boiled egg with lots of my homemade mayo. Maybe my body is starting to retrain itself or to tell me what it needs. Needless to say, I did not eat and the feeling passed. I am not going to waste the effort I have put in this week and break protocol.

[Note: Since your ketostix is finally past negative, your sleepless night is indicative of fat-burning. It’s a pain in the you-know-what — but I bet you’re pleased with your measurements on Monday. :)]

Protocol Round 1, Week 1, Day 6 – 4/7

Weight: 256.5 = down .8 pound

Lunch:
– 8 oz Spinach
– 5 oz asparagus
– 6 oz Zucchini
– 8 oz chicken liver
– 2 T butter
– 1 oz heavy cream

Dinner:
– 6 oz romaine
– .5 T olive oil

I slept a little better last night and woke up more alert.  Being Saturday, I was able to go back to sleep for an hour after my 6 am visit to the bathroom. My fasting BG was up a bit, maybe from the rice yesterday?  But it is still well below my beginning numbers.

[Note: “81” is not ‘up’ — it’s perfect. :)]

Protocol Round 1, Week 1, Day 7 – 4/8

Weight: 256.5 = No change

Lunch:
– 8 oz Spinach
– 1 oz Sweet Potato
– 6 oz Zucchini
– 5 oz Asparagus
– 7 oz salmon
– 2 oz butter
– 6 oz romaine

I work up tired and a little hungry this morning, but after lunch I was more alert.  I wonder if the higher 2-hour PP means that my system is working slowly and the sweet potato sugar just stayed longer? I would think that 2 oz of butter should have been plenty. Most probably it is that I am not ready for sweet potato yet.

[Note: You did just fine. Yes, your insulin had a little trouble handling the glucose, but mastered it within the hour, without every spiking.]

Protocol Round 1, Week 2, Day 1 – 4/9

Weight: 253.6 = down 2.9 pounds

I am doing a happy dance today! I am amazed at my total weight loss for the first week. Most of it was water, but the tape measure tells me that some of it was fat. My BG numbers have improved significantly. Thanks to SugarFree, I am well on my way to healing my body.

[Note: Wow, Pam — what a week. You lost 22 pounds and 3 inches from where it counts. I’m not sure anyone could have asked for a better start. :)]

I have much more energy today and less pain in my joints. I was ready for lunch, but not starving. The scale numbers were such a surprise that I had to weigh myself twice just to make sure.

[Note: Insert Gold Star here. :D]

Protocol Round 1, Week 2, Day 3 – 4/11

Weight: 251.5 = no change

My energy level is good today. I slept well last night, once I finally fell asleep. If is almost as if severe fatigue may be a thing of the past for me. What is it about a beef liver meal that makes my BG higher than usual?

[Note: Because you’ve mistaken one thing for another. What raised your sugars today wasn’t the liver (though unlike other meats it does have some carbs, but so does chicken liver and that did nothing) — it was the sweet potato. That’s right, your system did ultimately handle an ounce of sweet potato, but it worked hard to do it. Not to worry — this will improve!]

Protocol Round 1, Week 2, Day 4 – 4/12

Weight: 249.7 = down 1.8 pounds

I feel better every day with more energy and less pain. I am not always thinking of food and I am not starving. If my meal time were to be an hour or so later, I don’t think it would make any difference. But once I start cooking, my brain clicks into “food mode” and I am ready to eat.

[Note: Pam, whenever your 2-hr PP is higher than your 1-hr PP, it’s best to keep taking your blood sugar every hour from that point in order to see how long it takes before it goes down again. That’s how you can understand how long it takes for your blood sugars to return to normal after eating any particular food — in this case an ounce of cooked rice. My guess is another hour would have seen a drop, but the truth is it could have continued to rise for another few hours. You don’t know unless you test, because some foods take a long time to fully convert to glucose.]

Protocol Round 1, Week 2, Day 6 – 4/14

Today was a good day. I loved eating my own fresh eggs again. However, I was not as happy with my BG numbers. The meter never lies so I did some investigation. I feel that with all of the fat, the potato was probably not the main culprit here. I always weigh my food carefully and do not use any seasoning blends. My guess is that the problem was the bacon. I do not buy honey cured, maple glazed bacon or anything of that nature. I routinely check that there are no carbs. However, if the sugar is less than one carb per serving I guess they don’t have to report it. This bacon was removed from the original wrapper and frozen in meal sized portions several months ago, so I cannot check. I will not be eating it again.

[Note: You may certainly eat it. Yes, your meter numbers were a little high but not spiked, so that means you simply need to eat the potato (it wasn’t the bacon, because even if ‘cured’ with a little sugar almost none of it remains after curing) with more fat. And even if it was the bacon, eating it on Maintenance with all the fat you’ll eat will be no problem either. :)]

It is the end of my second week and I am feeling amazingly well. There is much more energy and much less pain in my life. I am not feeling hunger at night but I am more than ready to eat when lunch is ready. When I start eating I feel that this would not be enough food. But, by the time I am finished, I am completely satisfied.

I woke up feeling less energetic than usual and a little achy. I mopped some floors and did a little cleaning, working slowly but steadily as usual. I decided to quit because I was a little shaky and almost weak. I took my BG again because I expected it to be very low. However that was not the case. I felt somewhat hungry, but not hungry enough to break protocol, so I fixed myself a cup of hot tea. I was ready to eat at meal time and feel a better, but still fatigued. Oddly enough it was very difficult to finish my entire meal. It was not a big deal, but I am curious. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

[Note: Pam, it’s hard to tell anything from one day, but if I had to guess I’d say that you are fighting off something. A month ago I would have said you’re coming down with something, but given your improved health and the excellent food you’re eating, you probably will fight it off. Still, your body is telling you something: take it easy. Put your feet up, read a book or watch TV while sipping some tea with a little coconut oil in it. Get a good night’s sleep tonight and see if you don’t feel better in the morning — which I hope you do. 🙂

On the other hand, if you’re hungry tomorrow, it may be time to switch you over to Maintenance. You’ve lost so much weight –nearly thirty pounds in two weeks — that your body simply may not be willing to go any further for a while. Which is fine, and what Maintenance is for: nourishing your body and building you up. So let’s both keep a careful eye on the next few days.]

Whatever was going on yesterday seems to be gone. I made a point to drink extra water and hot tea last night and today. That seemed to help. I woke up this morning with only a little pain and much more energy. I was able to eat my entire meal, but was not particularly hungry. I could have waited a couple of hours easily or eaten 25% less.

SugarFree thinks that I am fighting off something and suggested that I eat a light meal (just a little bacon and two eggs) today. However, I didn’t do that even though I was not particularly hungry again today. I do not feel sick, but I am more tired and a little achy as if the FMS was thinking about coming back for a visit. That is what I get for saying my fatigue may be a thing of the past. I was not able to finish the last three bites of the egg/spinach/salmon dish. Obviously I should have eaten only one rice cake, if that. This almost indifference to food is a new experience for me. I wonder if it is how normal people feel most of the time? I am happy I do not have to eat again today.

It is hard to cook before your meal because there is a tendency to want to taste.  It is hard to cook after your meal because you don’t even want to think about food. I am happy to see pretty good numbers all the way around.  I was surprised to be so hungry last night, for the first time on Protocol.  Even the beef dog treats looked good.  I drank a big glass of water and went to be early. I was definitely ready to start Maintenance today and enjoyed every bite.  I am sure I will not be the slightest bit hungry until tomorrow.

[Note: Good heavens, woman — you’ve lost thirty pounds in the last few weeks and an enormous amount of fat/inches — and you call that “pretty good”? LOL — I’d like to see what you would recognize as “good.”

However, I am concerned with your 2-hr PP.]

I have been sleeping well and waking up with more energy. My appetite is good. I am still amazed that I am moderately hungry by mealtime and ready to eat. Then I am absolutely and totally satisfied until the next day, with no cravings or food thoughts.

[Note: Given all the fat and calories you’re eating daily, I’d be shocked if you could think about food. :D]

[Note: After losing another inch and a half  of fat last week while eating a boatload of delicious calories and fat, I’m not surprised you’re looking forward to more. :)]

I am waking a couple of times during the night but still seem to have plenty of energy to get through the day. I’m more than ready to eat at mealtime and I finish everything. I plan to make more chopped liver this week, it’s become one of my favorite meals. My guess is the ounce of rice I ate today spiked my 1-hour PP. I will try half an ounce of starchy carb (not rice) tomorrow to see if that improves the situation.

Tossed and turned last night and for some reason was noticeably hungry about midnight. I drank some water and finally fell asleep. I was more than ready to eat today and had half an ounce of sweet potato with plenty of butter along with the rest of my meal. My 1 and 2-hour PP’s are still higher than I like. This has been typical for me when eating sweet potato. I will try one ounce of polenta tomorrow and hope for better numbers.

Maintenance is fascinating. I am eating tons of fat and lots of calories. By the end of my meal, I feel like I won’t be able to eat again for a couple of days. Yet twelve hours later I’m interested in food again. I woke up thinking about crispy broccoli and more of the fat that was on my boneless pork ribs yesterday. Better by far than craving sugar. I will take my 3-hour PP later.

I am doing a happy dance today. My BG numbers have improved. I happened to see myself in a store window this morning. I don’t have a full length mirror in my house, so this was a surprise. I was so startled that I looked for what must be distorting the picture. Since the reflection of the trees and my truck looked normal, I assume that the slimmer reflection looking back at me was equally accurate. I am looking forward to starting another week of Maintenance on Monday.

Grocery shopping this morning was interesting. They had just put out fresh hot bead and lemon cookies. The bread smelled wonderful, but it was easy to pass it all by with little thought. I had Chicken Normandy today and it was spectacular. I was smart enough to package and freeze the extra portions before I ate my meal. It was so wonderful that I almost ate enough for us all. However, my portion was very satisfying and a wonderful way to end my second week of Maintenance.

[Note: I’m glad you liked the Chicken Normandy – it’s still one of my favorite dishes. So here you are starting your third week of eating loads of fat and calories and you weigh 245.6 pounds. Two weeks ago, you weighed 245.1 pounds and had a bigger waist and hips. Guess all that worrying about ‘gaining it all back’ — as is usual on diets — was for naught. 🙂 You’re actually slimmer today than you were when you ended Protocol, and I’m so happy your reflection confirmed it.]

I tried crispy zucchini chips today and they were very tasty, but neither crispy or chippy.  I may try again using a rack in the pan.

[Note: Zucchini holds too much water to be a ‘one-stage’ roasting veggie. First, you have to slice very thin, salt, and drain the Z in a colander for about 30 minutes. Then wring out the slices in a dish towel until they’re bone dry. Then toss them with a bit of olive oil and salt, and roast them in a preheated 400 F. oven for 15-20 minutes.]

Tomorrow I am going to have kale chips again.  They are really a nice change.   It is a good thing I love both vegetables no matter how they are served.  I am feeling good and enjoying the sunshine today.

I have no idea what spiked my 1 hour PP today. I was grocery shopping this morning and wanted potato chips so badly I could almost taste them. And then on the way home I was craving tacos. I stuck to my menu but was disappointed to see that my 1-hour PP was high. Don’t tell me that thinking of carbs can be enough to cause trouble! Tomorrow will be a better day.

[Note: It will be a better day, because I added potato chips to your menu. 🙂 Nothing wrong with potato chips on Maintenance! As for the spike, since it wasn’t the food you ate today, there are only a few possibilities. High stress, exercise, any skin cream or shampoo with cortisone in it, or getting-to-expiration-date test strips – in that order. Anything ring a bell?]

I have decided that the potato chips were not worth the PP spike, so I may as well not even think about them for a while. I am sleeping very well and have good energy throughout the day. I hope everyone has a good weekend.

[Note: Although you may not see it now, those chips were very worthwhile indeed. They told you that your insulin is still insufficient to do its job, despite the help of all the fat you ate. This is crucial information a month in to Maintenance, because it indicates that Metformin is likely to be needed. Next round of Protocol should provide the relevant data. On the plus side, your insulin did lower your BG nicely for your 2-hr PP, which it would not have done a month ago! :)]

Protocol means less food, but I was very satisfied with my meal today. I am pleased to see another three-quarters of an inch less on the measuring tape. I am not as happy with my PP numbers. Good thing SugarFree told me this would happen when I switched from Maintenance to Protocol. She said it takes the brain at least 72 hours to realize calories are reduced and go into lipolysis. Once that happens I’ll have enough fat in my system to lower my meter readings again.

[Note: I’m glad you’re feeling better, but your ketostix and blood sugars are not. Hopefully both will return to normal once you’re done with the antibiotic and Benadryl, which is the likely culprit. Good news though, that you’ve lost nearly two more inches of fat!]

When I saw the 89 FBG this morning, I hoped that I was making a turn for better BG numbers.

[Note: It’s impossible to get ‘better numbers’ while you are taking medication that raises blood sugar. And the stress over it may well raise them even higher. You should be off everything in another week, and your numbers will come down.]

[Note: The pound loss is nice – but the real happy dance is for the inch/fat loss. Without that, the pound loss doesn’t mean much. The real loss is the fat; the pound loss is the confirmation of that that loss. :D]

I was cautiously optimistic when I saw my 1-hour PP.  I was very discouraged to see my 2-hour.  I will keep taking my BG readings until everything normalizes.

[Note: I know it must seem discouraging, but your 1-hr today was the first time it’s been below 100 for months. This means your insulin did its job, but was insufficient to handle all the glucose. It may seem counter-intuitive, but this is not the time to retreat, but to keep on eating small amounts of various starchy carbs every day so that your insulin can get strong enough to do its job. Not eating the carb — which is very bad for your thyroid hormones, a major component of a healthy metabolism — will only keep it lazy.]

I am enjoying the fresh produce that is so abundant and inexpensive this time of year at our local farmer’s markets. My garden is still giving me plenty of cucumbers and zucchini. I am beginning to think I will never see a red tomato this year, but since I can eat such a small amount at this time maybe that is a blessing. Lots of fresh tomatoes could be too tempting.

I have been working extra hours on the computer the last couple of days. Once I go to bed, I fall asleep quickly and sleep well. With the longer nights, it is harder to get up at 5:30, since it is still dark outside. I am very much influenced by sunshine, and I know I will miss the early dawn and late dusk of mid- summer.

Wednesday is my long day and it was cold and dark at three this morning. I am used to dark, but was not happy to feel the cold. I am still in a shorts and tee shirt mode with all the windows open. I guess I’d better buy some new winter clothes since it won’t be long before I need them. Last year’s are too big to wear out in public, so I will be off to Goodwill with a bag of plus-sized clothes.

Today I ran into someone I had not seen for several months. She commented on how great I looked. I thanked her and said that I had lost a little weight and cut my hair. She said that it was more than that; I looked more energetic and more alive. It may not feel that there is a noticeable change from day to day, but little things add up over time. And I am happy to see that my BG numbers are edging down closer to where they belong.

I have a couple of friends who are dieting. They asked if I was dieting since I was looking thinner. After thinking for about three seconds, I said “not really.” I know what I should eat so I choose what sounds good for that day and then don’t have to think about it anymore. Since I am eating  healthy food with sufficient fat, I am seldom hungry. That is truly liberating.

My blood sugars are finally getting into the normal range, but my hands and feet are puffy so I am increasing my potassium and drinking extra fluids.

[Note: That will make things worse. Edema is a sign of insufficient sodium, which does not allow the body to retain potassium. Diluting insufficient sodium will only increase potassium loss. Increase sodium instead.]

I bought some fennel as well as frozen okra in addition to the ton of fresh greens I buy each week. I am going to try the fennel raw as a salad with a lemon oil dressing. The okra will be sautéed in duck fat. Maybe I will sauté some collard greens with pork to go with the okra. Almost a good southern meal, minus the corn bread!

[Note: Why not add the corn bread? It’s delicious, especially with butter.]

Although it’s been very cold the last several nights, with temperatures in the mid-teens, I have had no increase in joint and/or muscle pain as I have had in the past. The improved diet and the suggested supplements have made a difference. Hopefully this will mean a much more comfortable winter.

I have been waking earlier, which is unusual for me in the fall and winter. Getting up in the dark has always been difficult. And I am waking in the middle of the night feeling very warm. I sleep in a very cool room so hopefully this means I’m burning fat. My energy level is good despite the fact that I am sleeping fewer hours most nights.

We have a cold front along with a low pressure system and rain in the forecast, starting this evening.  I am happy to relate that I have NO increase in joint or muscle pain.  I find this amazing as I would normally be almost unable to function.  What a bonus this way of eating has brought me!

[Note: Much as I would like to give my Protocol all the credit, to be fair, most of the lessened pain is due to the Boswellia/Curcumin duo I suggested you take. I’m glad it’s working so well for you. :)]

[Note: Glad you enjoyed it. However, since this is the only week you’ve lost any fat, best to stay on Protocol for the rest of this week.]

Pam’s Farewell – November 21, 2012

Dear Friends,

Work issues, personal issues and life in general have brought much stress into my life recently. For this reason, I have decided to take a break from Protocol. Hopefully when everything gets back to normal I will be able to rejoin the group. I look forward to being with you again in the future.

In the meantime I will take what I have learned, strive to eat healthy and hopefully continue to repair my body.  I thank SugarFree for her amazing support and patience these last seven months, because under her guidance I’ve lost 39 pounds (15% of my total body weight!) and a full 15.5 inches of fat. My joint pains are mostly gone thanks to her knowledge, and a good night’s sleep and a good day’s energy has been restored to me, which I never thought would happen.

Most amazing of all, despite spending more time in Maintenance than in the Protocol phase, and eating tons of calories and fat and great food, my biggest fear never came true: that I would gain it all back. In fact, I’ve gained nothing back in all this time, and that has never happened  in the past. Here’s what I wrote in my introduction:

“I am the poster child for diet failures. I might lose a little, but then every pound came back and they each brought a friend with them.”

Well, this time it worked. I didn’t diet at all, but I lost fat and weight and dress sizes, and not a single ounce or inch came back. And I know if I keep following SugarFree’s Protocol, they never will. Thank you for everything.

Pam, you’ve worked hard for what you’ve achieved! Stay healthy and when you’re ready to come back, just let me know. Have a great Thanksgiving!

SugarFree

Welcome to the family, Pam. This is an amazing journey. You will do well!

    • Pam says:

Thank you Margo. I am working on my first few menus and going shopping for fresh wild caught salmon this weekend. I want to be totally prepared come Monday morning.

Welcome, Pam! Congratulations on making such a wise decision and a commitment to change for the better. I too am starting Protocol on Monday and look forward to the support of others.

Welcome, Pam! Good luck on your first day and wishing you much success on your journey to good health!

  6. Pam says:

Thanks, SugarFree. I was pretty sure the headache would only last a couple of days. It is not severe at this point, just annoying. Happy to see the fluid gone as that should ease the aches and pains a little.

    Pam

  7. Todd says:

    Pam,

Wow, look at that one day loss! That is just awesome and I’m sure it put a smile on your face. They are right — the headaches will go away. I don’t have headaches like I used to and my energy is great. Stick it out for a few days and it should be all good.

    Todd

    • Pam says:

Thanks, Todd. I am not going to let a little headache stop me. I look forward to better energy just as soon as possible!

  8. Pam says:

SugarFree, feeling better is a big plus. I am looking forward to Monday to see what the tape measure says.

    Pam

  9. Pam says:

I will keep my fingers crossed for good measurements. I hope I get a little more sleep over the weekend, since next week is going to be very stressful, work-wise. Although I an amazed that I feel much better today then I did at the beginning of the week, even with little sleep. More energy and less pain. If I am going to be awake, I have a couple of books I can read so all is not lost.

    Pam

  10. Pam says:

Thanks, SugarFree. All I did was what you told me to do, so you deserve most of the credit for your time and research. I know every week will not be this outstanding, but I am happy to be off to a strong start.

    Pam

  11. Pam says:

Well, I am doing a “happy dance” as I do love bacon. And I will never turn down any extra fat offered! While I am content on my Protocol, I look forward to Maintenance.

    Pam

  12. Pam says:

Thanks, SugarFree. The tea sounds good, but I could not eat another bite, even if it was chocolate or something forbidden. I am tired and will take it easy the rest of the day. I don’t really feel sick, just kind of beat up.

    Pam

  13. Pam says:

If it were not for the 2 hour PP of 104, I would have written “fantastic numbers.” My 3-hour PP was back down to 96; I hope that makes things better. My high number often seems to be at about 90 minutes for some reason, unless I eat even a bit of starchy carb. Then all bets are off. However, I expect that by this time next year I will have less of a reaction.

    Pam

    • SugarFree says:

If out of an entire week your only complaint is a single slightly higher blood sugar reading — I believe the word “fantastic” still applies.:)

      SugarFree

  14. Pam says:

Thanks, SugarFree. It is great to be able to eat such wonderful meals and know that each day I am a step closer to a healthy body and a smaller me.

    Pam

  15. Pam says:

    SugarFree asked: “Ring a bell?”

I find it hard to judge stress. Yesterday I had to get up at 3:30 a.m. so I was tired and work had a few annoying glitches. Nothing earth shattering. Test strips expiration is 7/2013. No lotions or shampoos. I have a nasty ding on my shin bone that I am treating with an antibiotic cream, but no steroids. I will watch it closely, but I would rather avoid a trip to the doctor who will feel honor bound to give me oral antibiotics and or steroid creams.

[Note: Check your antibiotic cream to make sure it isn’t a ‘triple’ that has other creams in it! Also, try coconut oil on the wound; it’s an amazing natural antibiotic. And finally, having the wound not heal for many days does more damage to your body than taking an oral antibiotic or whatever is needed to heal it quickly.

That said, your leg issue could NOT have caused the spike — because it was a SPIKE. If it was the leg, all your meter readings would have been equally elevated.]

  16. Pam says:

Thanks, SugarFree. You are right, of course. I officially retired my oh so baggy jeans for a smaller pair. And since the weather is warming up, I will be ordering a couple of new short sleeved tops as well.

    Pam

  17. Pam says:

Thanks, SugarFree. It was hard to not become discouraged but I decided to simply continue down the path and trusted that my body would catch on to the program (and Metformin) sooner or later.
