SugarFree Protocol – Anita

Anita will join us on Monday, July 15 – but you can read about her now.

Anita’s Introduction:

Hi, everyone. I am 53, 5′ 5″ and weigh 168 pounds. I have dieted since age thirteen, have read at least a hundred books on health and nutrition, and have followed endless plans that supposedly “worked for hundreds of people” – all to no avail. I followed low carb, low-fat, Atkins and HCG. The only thing that took the weight off was the starvation of Simeon’s protocol, but in spite of my best efforts I could never find a way to make the weight loss stick. So I’m looking forward to following Protocol and finally ending my time as a dieter and “health researcher.”

The results of my metabolic blood tests show that I’m insulin resistant, despite eating very low carb for years. I am hypothyroid, originally diagnosed in 1992, probably because I had already been dieting for half my life. At that time my doctor put me on Synthroid, which never helped. I spent years with my hair falling out, weight gain (despite eating a scant 1000 calories a day,) severe constipation  and general exhaustion. And here I am, twenty years later – still at square one.

I am looking forward to this Protocol, so that I can eat like a normal person for the first time in my life and NOT gain weight. So I can get rid of the fifty so-called health books clogging my bookshelf. So I can inspire others, once I get the hang of this and can add to the recipes here. I love to cook and entertain. 🙂 And so I can set a good example for my teenaged kids who are not as fit as they should be and who are already feeling left out of the fun in life. Thank YOU, SugarFree for sharing your knowledge with me and the world via this website.

I was able to stay up a bit longer last night, though I was hungry this morning. My air-conditioner is not working well, so I threw all my food in a pressure cooker with spices and made lamb stew. It was delicious. Protocol makes me eat foods beyond what I normally eat, and I am enjoying it.

I could not finish my lunch today. I woke up in the middle of the night, then slept in till late morning. Does Protocol have something to do with it?

[Note: Yep. You’re now deep into lipolysis, which means you’re burning fat. It’s the same reason you’re having trouble finishing meals – because you are now being fed thousands of calories more per day then you’re putting in with a fork. 🙂 Unfortunately, our bodies burn fat in the middle of the night, and that’s what’s waking you. Once you’re on Maintenance in a week or two, lipolysis will cease until the next round of Phase 1 Protocol.]

Wasn’t hungry again to day. It’s TOM, so I’m bloated, which I suspect caused the inches up on waist and bust, and the stuffed feeling. Especially since I lost a whopping 1.5″ of fat from my thighs, and another .25″ from my arms. That’s a total of two inches of fat gone in a week!

[Note: As in my note yesterday, the ‘stuffed feeling’ is due to being, well, stuffed – as you’re finally releasing, burning and utilizing your excess stored adipose tissue. And yes, the bloat and inches up is due to TOM, and will disappear once that’s done.]

Protocol Round 1, Week 2, Day 2 – 7/23

Dragging a little , feel weak all over, could be the stress of these two days. I am still not sleeping well.

[Note: After some sleuthing, the answer to your rising blood sugars is simple. First, you’re not sleeping well or sufficiently. That by itself is enough to raise your blood sugars. Second, we’ve just discovered that you’ve been taking liquid melatonin, loaded with hidden sugars like glycerin. Taking melatonin in pill form, taking it at the right time of day — NOT just before you want to sleep — will ensure you start sleeping well again. That, and not taking sugar before bedtime (or at all) should mean lower glucose readings within a week after that.]

[Note: Since Melatonin is not a drug or sleeping pill but a hormone, it will take a week or two to build up in your system.]

I am not certain if it is the onion or the lack of sleep responsible for the BG spike.

[Note: The onion. Plus ‘carry-over’ from the sugar you ate yesterday.]

I could not finish my first Maintenance meal, but SugarFree says my tummy will expand to let me soon eat it all.

However, I am thrilled to report that in just two weeks on Protocol I’ve lost eleven pounds. And this week alone, in addition to the 3.25 inches of fat from my bust, waist and hips, I lost an additional 4.75 inches from my legs and around my knees. That’s EIGHT INCHES gone in a week!

Maintenance Round 1, Week 1, Day 2 – 7/30

Weight: 156.3 = down 1.4 pounds

I ate all my food slowly over an hour. I feel a bit of acid re-flux.

[Note: When you come to Protocol from a low-fat way of eating, your gall bladder, which is designed to handle massive amounts of consumed fats, has gone dormant. It is no longer producing the amount of bile acids necessary to digest fat properly. People who eat this way for an extended period often end up with gall stones as a result. The good news is, the gall bladder almost always bounces back in a few weeks once good fat is reintroduced into the diet. :)]

Maintenance Round 1, Week 1, Day 3 – 7/31

Weight: 157.4 = up 1.1 pounds

Ketostix: Large

Blood Glucose:
Fasting: 89
1 hour PP: 97
2 hour PP: 101

I am feeling great and sleeping well, and able to eat all my food. I did eat the tomato towards the end of the meal – did that cause the spike in my 2-hour PP?

[Note: First, there was no spike. Your blood sugars today are great, despite eating some tomato (and no, eating it at the end or the beginning or the middle of the meal would have no effect – it’s the glucose in the tomato that’s the issue) – and some of that is due to all the fat and cream you ate with it. Second, a ‘spike’ is when blood sugars go *over* 110 PP. You weren’t even close. 🙂 Third, please remember that you will add water weight the first week of Maintenance, but that will disappear by next week.]

SugarFree and I figured out the mystery  of my suddenly higher blood sugars: I changed the time of day I take my thyroid medication. Used to be after I ate, then I moved it to before I ate (and took my blood sugars). Hopefully things will settle back to normal in a few days.

Maintenance Round 1, Week 2, Day 4 – 8/8

Weight: 157.4 = down 1.1 pounds

Ketostix: Large

Blood Glucose:
Fasting: 87
1 hour PP: 111
2 hour PP: 94

I am still waking too early and needing more sleep. Turns out it’s not the thyroid med, but the hydrocortisone I’m taking, which raises my cortisol, suppresses my melatonin – and raises my blood sugars!

I love the kale chips I made with lard and duck fat. I roasted them at 275 degrees for about half an hour. They are really delicious and I can’t wait to have them again.

Maintenance Round 1, Week 2, Day 5 – 8/9

I took my melatonin an hour later at SugarFree’s suggestion, and slept through the night. Today I had trout. I found a delicious time-saving trick. When I bring the trout home I cut it to size, stuff it with a ground up herb paste made with cilantro, lemon grass, garlic and basil. Then I package it in parchment paper and freeze. This way the trout is fresh frozen and Protocol-ready when I need it.

[Note: It wasn’t the cortisone that spiked your blood sugars today – it was the 3 full ounces of tomato you ate, when you are only supposed to eat 1 ounce. :(]

Luckily, Metformin not only doesn’t have side effects when taken properly, even when taken at high doses and for long periods of time, there’s clear scientific evidence that it substantially lowers women’s risk for heart disease and some cancers.]

Got to share a meal with my sister and niece; cooking for company is  fun. They could not believe how many greens I eat and  my sister is a vegan!

[Note: If she’s a vegan and not even consuming a mere 16 ounces of veggies a day – she may be eating the kind of sugar/garbage food-like substances that so many vegan friends consume these days. I call it La Vida Carb City. :)]

I should not even start on the vegan diet; it raises my blood pressure. My dear sister wanted to know if my diet was approved. I said approved by who? The people who endorse the diabesity diets of America? OH MY …

I’m starting to think my body just wants to be fat, which would be justified if I was eating cake.

[Note: I understand the frustration, because I lived through it. Until I figured out what was wrong (I, like you, also had Metabolic Syndrome XX), I not only couldn’t lose any more weight than what I already had, by the time I realized what was going on — excess gluconeogenesis turning my protein to glucose, and butt-lazy insulin unable to handle it or anything else — I had regained twenty pounds of the eighty I’d lost!

As we’ve discussed, in addition to MSXX, which only Metformin will help, you also need to be tested for fat mal-absorption (your ketostix say large and moderate, which indicates deep lipolysis/fat burning, but you are burning zero fat – just eliminating it in your urine, which means all that wonderful fat is neither nourishing you, nor helping slow the conversion of your food to glucose; hence the high meter readings, and weight and fat stall). In addition, you also need to better manage your stress, which raises cortisol, which depresses insulin, which lets your sugars rise.

That’s a lot, no doubt, but not taking care of all three issues will only keep you where you are. If you want your body to change, you’ll need to change all three conditions. And then it will happen. For me, once the Metformin took hold (about three months after I was on the full dose), it was like turning a switch. The identical foods that added pounds and inches back, now contributed to major pound and inch losses! The regained twenty pounds went away – followed by another thirty (though this took about three more years). I didn’t have your other two issues though, and you will need to address them simultaneously if you hope to see changes similar to mine. Better than staying frustrated, though. :D]

Happy to see a reasonable fasting number again.

[Note: Unfortunately, it’s not your fasting glucose that’s the problem after taking any medical test that affects your blood sugar. It’s the PP readings that went sky-high, and have remained high. As I suggested, you’re suffering from ‘carry-over’ (since you are still so insulin resistant) and it will take about a week for your numbers to approach normal again. Hopefully that will be by Monday or soon after.]

Anita’s Farewell – November 20, 2013

Due to family issues, this will be my last report although I will be staying on Protocol. While I am not yet completely healed I know I’m on the road to recovery, and have a strategy for healing all the way. I will be forever grateful to SugarFree for sharing all this life-changing information and tireless research not only with me, but with the world.

To SugarFree: I truly appreciate your having helped me navigate and eradicate the major road blocks to good health. I plan to eat Protocol for a long time, and live with my blood glucose monitor in my pocket. And I have your blog as my constant reference. Some day in the future I look forward to checking back in as a success story: a person who can normal amounts and kinds of food without gaining weight. I cannot thank you enough, SugarFree, for your knowledge and patience with me along the way.

Anita, you truly did all the work, and will reap the success you deserve. You’ve come a long way on your own, and the metformin will get you to the finish line. 🙂 Please keep me and your readers in the loop as you go forward and continue to heal your metabolism.

Happy T-Day!
